Bentley names state Rep. Mike Hill head of Alabama Banking Department

Gov. Robert Bentley has named state Rep. Mike Hill, R-Columbiana, superintendent of the state Banking Department.

Hill replaces John Harrison, who retired on Thursday, Bentleys office said in a news release.

Hill was elected to the Legislature in 1986 and has served on the committee that handles banking legislation throughout his 30 years as a lawmaker.

His new job means that he will resign from his House seat and the governor will set a date for a special election.

My family and I have always been humbled by the confidence of the people of Shelby County, Hill said in a statement.

This new challenge is an opportunity to better the lives of all Alabamians, from Muscle Shoals to Dothan, from Fort Payne to Bayou Le Batre.

Hills appointment is effective Tuesday.

Harrison had served in the position for 11 years, according to the governors office.

His leadership in the areas of banking regulation and lending has provided stability to the industry and protected consumers while moving the Department forward, Bentley said in a statement.
